A quest for money is the road traveled by many in hopes that money will afford them safety, security and a good life. Are you on that quest? How much money do you think you will need to be happy? Today I'll give you some food for thought when setting your financial goals.
First off, having a quest (in other words.. a "goal") is a very good thing. Being a hard worker is a good thing as well. The Bible says that "if you don't work, you don't eat" (2 Thessalonians 3:10). So, aspiring to do something is a great start.
We all have yearnings for something more. The bank account is never quite where we want it. The retirement account is not even close. Even when you reach financial freedom and are debt-free there is a desire for more.
That's the way God made us. We are designed with an insatiable appetite that will never be filled until we reach the pearly gates.
So, how much money do you need to be happy knowing that you will never truly be satisfied? Ask yourself these 3 questions to determine how much money you really need.
1. What would my perfect day look like?
My perfect day is working a job I love, enjoying an activity outside and spending time with my family. If my day includes these 3 things then my life is in balance and I am happy.
2. How much does it cost to live your "perfect day"?
If you are in debt up to your eyeballs then you will have a hard time realizing your perfect day. You have 2 choices. Sell what you own or make more money so that you can pay down your debt.
3. What are you willing to sacrifice?
Good things usually require a sacrifice. A new baby may require a few sleepless nights. A new promotion at work may include longer hours initially. A marriage... a marriage. If you are married I don't need to explain the sacrifices it takes to make a marriage good.
If you know where you are heading (your perfect day), know how much it will cost, and are willing to make some sacrifices along the way then you will find you need a lot less money than you had been chasing.
