My Story

"Do you think money grows on trees?" "Do you think I'm made of money?" I heard these same questions from my parents growing up. I grew up with a hard working mom and a father that moved from job-to-job until he could no longer work. Money was tight. I was taught indirectly that rich people were bad and that I was never going to have money. Even back then I knew that not having money sucked! I would look at other kids from school and see families living the American dream. I'd see a white-collared father working and providing for his family, driving nice cars and living in a nice home. It looked like a secure place to me. I wanted that.

In my house, there were fights every night. My father was physical with us and a lot of fights began because we were poor. Money issues caused a huge stress on the family. I wanted the secure environment that these other kids had but at the same time I was so jealous of what they had that deep down within myself I despised it. I struggled with this for a long time. In fourth grade I made the decision to be the first in my family line to go to college. I also vowed that I would never allow money to be a strain on my family life. I wanted money but since I grew up despising "the rich" I felt guilty. Growing up in a poor neighborhood leads to a lot of not so nice talk about the "rich" people. This was ingrained in who I had become and I knew that without changing my perspective I would be doomed to fail and only feel comfortable being in debt and poor.

By God's grace I changed my way of thinking and took the focus off of money and the big picture. I invested successfully in real estate, businesses and stocks (very little). When I stopped to actually look at what I had accomplished I was blown away. It was amazing and an all American dream story. Poor boy to well-to-do BMW driving "high-paid" consultant. (I was once introduced to a team of 30 people at a billion dollar international company as a "high-paid consultant". No lie!) It was at that point that I started having doubts again and stopped trusting God. I started to worry about what would happen if my business failed or I lost my job. In my mind I pictured my business declining and my family on the street. Before long my visions started to become a reality.

Right as the economy took a nosedive, my business declined and I was told I had 2 weeks left at my current consulting position. I had been a consultant for over 14 years and not once had this happened to me. It was really a blessing in disguise. It gave me time to step back and look at my finances and more importantly to trust in God's plan for me. I was no longer afraid but excited to see what God had waiting for me around the corner. I confronted my issues head on. I asked myself, "Why do I despise the rich? Don't I want to be rich?" and "Why do I feel guilty?". These questions led me to the Bible. If you aren't religious then bare with me for a moment. I found wisdom in the best selling book of all time. I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. Being rich and not in debt is ultimately what God wants for all of us. We aren't meant to be burdens on society but workers and compassionate to those less fortunate.
